The ruler is a place where the sign energy and the planet energy understand each other. The planets functions good in its ruler. The polarity of the ruler is the detriment, the energy of the planet and sign do not work well together causing a conflict. The planet functions poorly in its detriment. The exaltation of a sign is the best possible placement, the energies work with easy together. The planet functions the best in its exaltation. The fall is the polarity of the exaltation, the fall is the worst possible placement for a planet the energies are terrible together. The planet functions at its worst in its fall. Accidental Dignity A planet is accidently dignified when it is in a house that is ruled by a sign the planet rules. It is strengthened by house position. For example if you have Mars in the 1st house you will have some of the qualities of Mars in Aries, regardless of what sign your mars is in.

Example:
The Sun in the 5th house is accidently dignified because Leo is the natural ruler of the 5th house and Leo is ruled by the Sun.
