Ferrets & Treats

Blizzard is a happy ferret, he loves his ferretone!
Ferret treats should be healthy. Healthy treats for ferrets include:

  • meat
  • a kibble other than what is in their bowl
  • oil based hair supplements (Ferretone and Linatone)
  • meat baby food
  • hairball laxative as needed
  • ferret vitamin paste

Foods to avoid are:

  • fruits (they can not digest them)
  • sugary treats
  • human foods

A taste of your ice cream once in a while likely won't do any harm but keep amounts to very small and give infrequently. Many of the foods and treats that are sold for ferrets are not really good for them. Read labels.

Ferretone and Linatone:
Ferretone and Linatone are very similar oil based vitamin supplements. They are often given as treats, nearly every ferret loves them. Both products contain vitamin A, which can be very harmful or even fatal in excess. It probably takes a lot more than you would ever give your ferret to become a danger. Just to be safe some people prefer to dilute them 50/50 with olive oil or vegetable oil (not mineral oil). Too much Ferretone or Linatone can give your ferrets loose stools. No more than a few drops to one pump a day is recommended. If you're using a good food they proabably are not necessary, but are great as a healthy treat.
