Ferrety Smell

Ferrets don't have to smell bad there are many things you can do to keep the smell down to a minimum. Some of these things are:

  • Wash all bedding at least once a week.
  • Wash washable toys.
  • Clean cage including bars, ferrets rub oil off their coats onto anything they rub on.
  • Keep ears clean. Dirty ears are not only a breeding ground for mites, excess wax creates a bad smell. Dirty ears can also lead to ear infections. If you suspect mites have your ferrets ears examined by your vet.
  • Scoop litter boxes often.
  • Wash litter boxes with bleach water.
  • Check corners behind furniture, under the couch etc., any place a ferret may have went potty.
  • There are Enzyme products on the market that are mixed with food or water.
  • Feed high quality kibbles and foods.
  • Avoid using foods that contain a lot of fish.
  • Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the laundry.
  • Add vanilla extract to the rinse water.
  • Spray fabric furniture and carpet in the room with a fabric refresher (allow to dry completely before allowing them in contact with sprayed areas and always follow label precautions) or better yet, cover them with a washable throw.
  • Invest in a carpet shampooer and shampoo carpets in areas they are allowed to roam often. Use an enzyme shampoo that removes pet odors.
  • Don't bath too often, the more you bath a ferret the more oil they will produce to replace what you have removed. Bathing too often actually increases the musky odor rather than reducing it. Many ferret owners bath every few months while some bath only twice a year at shedding time and some owners never bath at all, Of course use common sense, if your ferret goes diving in the bowl of banana pudding you had sitting out to take to the picnic a bath may be in order.
