Magickal Hours Calculator

According to medieval traditions, each day begins with sunrise and ends with the following sunrise. Each day is divided into 24 "unequal hours".
The first unequal hour of the day is ruled by the planet who's day it is (i.e., on Sunday, the Sun rules the first unequal hour after sunrise).

Sunday is ruled by the Sun.
Monday is ruled by the Moon.
Tuesday is ruled by Mars.
Wednesday is ruled by Mercury.
Thursday is ruled by Jupiter.
Friday is ruled by Venus.
Saturday is ruled by Saturn.

How to read this chart:
The first daylight hour of Sunday is the Sun,
The first night hour of Sunday is Jupiter...

1. Find out the time of su rise and sunset in your area.
Don't know your sunrise time? Check here (opens in new window)

2. Total the number of minutes of daylight and divide by twelve.
3. Find the day of the week and the planet that rules that "unequal hour".
4. Find the night hours using the same directions.

Example sunrise at 7:03AM sunset at 7:36PM = 12 hours 33 minutes = 12x60 + 33 = 753 minutes
753 mins divided by 12 = 62 mins
Then each planetary hour between sunrise and sunset equals 62 minutes.
Therefore the first unequal planetary hour would be from 7:03AM until 8:05AM, the second unequal planetary hour would be from 8:05AM until 9:07AM. etc.
Lets say today is Thursday. The first unequal hour (in this case 62 minutes) would be ruled by Jupiter. At 8:05AM we enter the second planetary hour ruled by Mars.

Night Hours

In this example we have 11 hours 27 minutes "left over" after our daylight hours
24h - 12h33m = 11h27m.
11x60 + 27 = 687 minutes
687 mins divided by 12 = 57 mins
Then each planetary hour between sunset and sunrise equals 57 minutes.
Therefore the first unequal night planetary hour would be from 7:36PM until 8:33PM, the second unequal planetary hour would be from 8:33PM until 9:30PM. etc.
Again saying today is Thursday, the first unequal night hour (in this case 57 minutes) would be ruled by the Moon. At 8:33PM we enter the second planetary hour ruled by Saturn.
